A Bettsville man is dead after he drove his Jeep Commander off the road and rolled over in a Sandusky County field.
The Fremont post of the Ohio Highway Patrol investigated a single-vehicle fatal crash June 20, just before 5:30 p.m., on County Road 62 near CR 80 in Jackson Township.
A Jeep Commander driven by Doyle Durst, 65, Bettsville, was headed east on CR 62 when it drove off the right side of the roadway. A man witnessed Durst’s crash. He overcorrected, driving off the left side of the road, where it struck an embankment and overturned.
Lt. Angel Burgos said that Durst was ejected from his vehicle and likely died from his injuries at the scene. However, the cause of the accident is still unknown.
“The report shows that a seat belt was not in use and the individual was completely ejected from the vehicle,” Burgos said. “When he overcorrected, he went into the left side [of the road] and went into a ditch and into a field on the north side of the roadway. It was at the time he went into the ditch, that’s when he was ejected.”
“According to the witness, the vehicle did try to get back into its lane; it went left of center in front of him, they looked into the rearview mirror and saw the vehicle starting to roll,” Burgos said. “He turned around to check on the individual and saw them in the field.”
Burgos said he does not suspect any foul play. The Jeep was the only vehicle involved and roadway conditions were good.
He said that the Sandusky County coroner investigators will determine the cause of death after the Lucas County morgue conducts an autopsy.
“They will come out with a formal report on the actual cause of death,” Burgos said. “There could be something medical that could have happened prior to the crash, or it could just have been driver error that caused it. We also send blood kits to have blood drawn, to see if there was anything in the individual’s system that might have caused some level of impairment, but that is unknown at this time.”
He advised people to wear their seat belts and make sure they are careful when on the road.
The Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Helena Fire Department, Sandusky County EMS, Sandusky County Coroner’s Office, Mercy Health Life Flight and John’s Welding and Towing.
