Michigan's Dusty May leaves for NBA, can Ohio State Capitalize?

It is never wise to stay complacent in the world of modern day collegiate athletics and early Monday morning, Ohio State rivals found that out.

Dusty May’s rise at Michigan is ending almost as quickly as it began as multiple reports said he is accepting the job of head coach for the Dallas Mavericks, sending shockwaves throughout the college basketball world. May will replace Jason Kidd and will become the latest college basketball coach to try his hand in the NBA.

Dusty May built his name taking Florida Atlantic to the Final Four in 2023, and was hired by Michigan shortly thereafter. May took Michigan from the Big Ten basement to the Sweet 16 in his first season, and followed it up with a 34-3 record in which Michigan won the National Title. There is going to be a lot of turnover at Ann Arbor as the Wolverines’ entire front court of Morez Johnson Jr, Yaxel Lendeborg, and Aday Mara are projected to be lottery picks in Tuesday night’s NBA Draft.

May’s exit removes one of the brightest minds in the sport and will immediately injects uncertainty into Michigan’s current roster and future recruiting. Ohio State famously missed on hiring Dusty May when they last had a head coach opening, opting to promote current head coach Jake Diebler.

The Wolverines were perceived favorites to win the Big Ten Conference again next season but now with having to replace a head coach, on top of already replacing three potential lottery players, fans may have to temper their optimism.
