CANTON ‒ A 20-year-old man is being held in the Stark County Jail on a $1 million bond, accused of beating and stomping another man.
John A. Range III, of the east side of Canton, is charged with attempted murder in connection with the alleged assault on the 63-year-old victim, which took place at Ninth Street and Walnut Avenue NE.
The incident was reported in the late morning of June 20. Range is also facing felonious assault and a weapons-related charge. Range is prohibited from having a gun due to a previous felony conviction.
A complaint filed by police in Canton Municipal Court says Range knocked the victim to the ground during a fight. As the victim lay on the ground unconscious, Range stomped on his head, the document says. As a result, the victim “is lying in a hospital bed unresponsive and intubated,” it says.
Judge Jeremy J. Foltz set bond for Range during an arraignment on June 22. He ordered Range to have no contact with the victim.
The defendant was represented in court by the Stark County Public Defender’s Office, which does not generally comment on clients’ cases outside court.
A private attorney appointed by Foltz to represent Range, due to a conflict of interest wtih the public defender’s office, did not immediately respond to an email sent on the afternoon of June 22 offering him the opportunity to comment on the case.
A status conference is scheduled for June 25 in court.
