Vote for Ames Tribune male Athlete of the Week for June 14-20

The week of June 14-20 saw some exciting high school baseball action featuring teams from the Ames area.

Roland-Story, the No. 2 team in Class 2A according to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, improved to 24-1 overall and the Norsemen took the lead in the Heart of Iowa Conference race after going 5-0 during the week.

Ames went 3-3 during the week after sweeping Des Moines Lincoln and picking up a split during a doubleheader with Southeast Polk. Ballard, the No. 9 team in 3A, took down Gilbert by a 12-2 score and Nevada in a 7-0 shutout and Gilbert defeated Nevada by a 6-5 score.

Nevada snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over Greene County on June 19 at Nevada. Collins-Maxwell went 2-2 with wins over Clarksville and Bater and Colo-NESCO ended the week with victories over Dunkerton (7-4) and BCLUW (10-4).

There were several outstanding individual performances from area baseball players during the week.

Chance Georgius, Roland-Story

Georgius homered twice during the 2A No. 2 Roland-Story baseball team’s 16-1, 17-1 doubleheader sweep over Nevada on June 15 at Nevada.

Georgius homered once in each game and he totaled four runs and five RBIs. Georgius also drove in three runs during a 12-1 win over South Hamilton on June 19 at Jewell.

Erik Anderson, Ames

Anderson had an explosive night on offense during the Ames baseball team’s 13-3 victory over Southeast Polk on June 19 at Ames.

Anderson went 4-for-4 with a double against the Rams. He drove in four runs to help the Little Cyclones pull off the victory.

Bowen Benedict, Ballard

Benedict threw a strong game, and he also hit the ball well during 3A No. 9 Ballard’s 12-2 victory over Gilbert on June 17 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.

Benedict gave up one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in six innings as the winning pitcher. He also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a sacrifice and two RBIs.

Ean Eldred, Gilbert

Eldred was Gilbert’s big run producer during the Tiger baseball team’s 6-5 victory over Nevada on June 18 at Gilbert.

Eldred went 2-for-3 with a double and a sacrifice hit during the game. He scored one run and drove in four for the Tigers.

Hunter Purvis, Colo-NESCO

Purvis pitched the Colo-NESCO baseball team to a 7-4 victory over Dunkerton on June 17 at Zearing.

Purvis gave up four unearned runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and just one walk in 6 1/3 innings. He also went 1-for-3 with a double, walk and run against the Raiders.
