Alliance officer on leave; Build Ohio advances; trash rates rise

ALLIANCE ‒ An Alliance police officer arrested June 7 in Austintown has been put on paid leave.

Law Director Andrew Selwa told City Council on June 15 that Sgt. Ethan Griffith would remain on administrative leave pending an investigation and internal review, per the union contract.

Griffith, the son of former Alliance Police Chief Scott Griffith, was arrested after Austintown police said he crashed a pickup and fled the scene. He faces multiple charges.

Selwa said Griffith was off-duty and on a vacation at the time of the alleged incident.

Build Ohio housing project makes progress, seeks loan

Build Ohio Neighborhoods Inc., a North Canton nonprofit, has made significant progress on a housing project that started March 31.

The project is a partnership with Canton for All People and local stakeholders. It calls for 10 new affordable single-family houses in Alliance.

To date, five of the 10 houses are under construction and at various stages of completion. Three are at least 52% complete.

The construction sites are at 625 Milner St., 727 Milner St., 947 S. Liberty Ave., 959 S. Liberty Ave. and 970 S. Seneca Ave. All five are slated to be done by Oct. 5.

In the meantime, City Council is considering a $500,000 loan at 2% interest for Build Ohio to help finance the other five homes in 2026.

Members discussed the proposed loan during a June 15 City Council meeting with members in executive session. The funds would come from the city’s Urban Development Action Grants account.

No action was taken on the loan request because UDAG rules require no legislative action for 14 days after an executive session. A vote is expected July 6.
