The loss of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland continues to weigh heavily on the Dallas Cowboys organization, and few have felt it more deeply than former defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton.
During a recent interview Whitecotton, now the Titans defensive line coach, became visibly emotional when discussing Kneeland — a young ascending player he not only coached, but helped develop both on and off the field.
Kneeland tragically passed away in November 2025 at just 24 years old. He was viewed as one of the Dallas’ emerging defensive pieces and a player whose best football was still ahead of him. For his former coach, the memories that hit hardest aren’t about sacks or stat lines but about the person Kneeland was.
Whitecotton’s connection to Kneeland went beyond scheme and technique — evident when Whitecotton wore Kneeland’s jersey ahead of a Cowboys game, underscoring the impact the young defender had on those around him.
Wearing a No. 94 pin on his hoodie, the former Dallas defensive coach was happy to hear about the arrival of Makhai Kneeland, who was born on June 11. Catalina Mancera, Kneeland girlfriend, was pregnant at the time of his passing.
“I love him. I’m really thankful that we have his baby boy to carry on his legacy. Because Marshawn was a special guy, man. He was a special guy to me.” — Aaron Whitecotton
The grief surrounding Kneeland hasn’t faded with time and for people like Whitecotton, the emotion remains raw. That speaks volumes to who Kneeland was not just as a promising football player, but a teammate and person who left a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to now him.
