Fans are upset after Tuesday night’s MGK concert at Pine Knob was called off due to weather only several songs into the artist’s headlining set.
Videos from the concert posted to social media show venue officials announcing the show’s cancellation from the stage and fans booing the decision. MGK could also be seen physically reacting to the news.
“At this time we’re going to have to end the show,” an official says on stage in one video, while MGK can be seen behind him, visually upset, protesting the decision before burying his head in his hands.
“We have severe weather in the area, unfortunately we’ll have to end the show tonight, everybody be safe, and we wish you the best of luck getting home,” the official said.
One video shows MGK reacting to a temporary show pause. “Who got superpowers in here, dude? Someone needs to f—in’ blow that s— away, dude,” he said, referring to the storm. “If you have superpowers, now is not the time to conceal yourself, dude.”
Another video shows MGK attempting to continue the show, at one point pulling out a guitar to play acoustically from the foot of the stage, as he is advised not to do so. He ultimately stopped before playing.
He later posted about the concert’s cancellation on his Instagram stories.
“Detroit… im still in shock that a storm stopped the show,” he wrote. “i fought for us for 20 min when they cut the music i held no power over the venues decision this was a first for me.. at least we popped that cherry together (hopefully that last sentence made you smile).”
He followed up with a post of him looking forlorn, along with middle finger, lighting rod and storm cloud emojis.
The 36-year-old artist, born Colson Baker, hit the stage at 9:23 p.m. was reportedly only several songs into his set when the plug was pulled on the show. There were weather warnings in the area throughout the night, and the venue posted an alert earlier to social media in the evening, asking fans to shelter in place in their vehicles until further notice.
That shelter-in-place warning was later lifted, and openers Mod Sun and Wiz Khalifa were able to perform prior to MGK’s headlining set.
On the 313 Presents website, Pine Knob’s weather policy states, “All shows are ‘Rain or Shine’ events. Only in extreme inclement weather are shows cancelled or postponed.”
The policy further states that, “tickets for all events are sold on a non-refundable and non-exchangeable basis (this stipulation is clearly marked on each ticket).”
Fans registered their dismay on social media, posting about the cancellation as they left the venue, some arguing the light rain did not justify calling off the show.
“It really sucks because we drove six hours here, paid for an airbnb for three days, took off work, we did the works to come out here and enjoy this concert and we got maybe five or six songs in,” one fan said on TikTok.
“I will never, ever in my life purchase tickets to an outdoor concert ever again, because of s— like this… when you get an outdoor concert ticket, you’re kinda playing Russian roulette.”
