Why Quentin Johnston is excited to play in Mike McDaniel's offense

Wide receiver Quentin Johnston shared his excitement to play in offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s yards-after-catch-heavy system.

“In college, I was a big yards-after-catch guy,” Johnston said. “So when he kind of introduced some of those things to us during meetings and at practice, he kind of lit me up a little bit. I’m very fired up about that.”

Johnston has shown flashes of dynamic running ability with the ball in his hands. Dating back to his final year at TCU, roughly half of his total receiving production came after the catch, and he was second in college football with 8.9 yards after the catch per reception.

McDaniel, known for scheming wide receivers into open space, provides the perfect environment for Johnston’s blend of size and physical playmaking ability.

During his stops in San Francisco and Miami, McDaniel consistently elevated wideouts into top-tier YAC producers. Players like Deebo Samuel and Tyreek Hill routinely set career highs under McDaniel’s watch.

Now, Johnston gets to tap into that same developmental pipeline.

Johnston had his fifth-year option picked up this offseason. He said the decision allows him to play more freely as he enters his fourth season.

“I’m not comfortable yet. I’m glad I got that, but I’m going to continue to work,” Johnston said.

Over his first three NFL seasons, Johnston has recorded 144 receptions, 1,877 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns across 46 regular-season games.
