As in previous years, financial company Northwestern Mutual took the top spot among the eight Wisconsin businesses in this year’s Fortune 500.
Of the eight Wisconsin companies among the 2026 Fortune 500, only one, WEC Energy Group, climbed in rank from last year’s list. The Milwaukee-based energy company moved up 27 spots from 2025, to 424th on the list. Its revenue during the last fiscal year totaled $9.8 billion, up from about $8.6 billion – a 14% increase.
Released June 3, the Fortune 500 is an annual list of the 500 largest companies in the United States by revenue, published by Fortune magazine. Each company is ranked by its total revenue from the previous fiscal year – so the 2026 list is based on totals from fiscal year 2025.
Aside from WEC Energy Group, the other Wisconsin companies fell in rank from last year’s list – except for Northwestern Mutual, which maintained its position as the 109th company on the list.
The next Wisconsin-based company behind Northwestern Mutual on the 2026 list is financial technology company Fiserv, which reported $21.2 billion in revenue, a 3.6% increase from last year. It ranked 215 on this year’s Fortune 500.
The same eight Wisconsin companies listed on the Fortune 500 – Northwestern Mutual, Fiserv, American Family Insurance Group, ManpowerGroup, Kohl’s, Oshkosh Corp., WEC Energy Group and Rockwell Automation – have been the state’s representatives on the list for the past several years.
The most recent list marks the 72nd annual Fortune 500. The top ranking went to Amazon, which reported $716.9 billion in revenue – beating out Walmart, which had held the top spot for 13 years.
