A 59-year-old person was killed Friday after a dump truck crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a pickup truck in Yates County, according to New York State Police.
The crash occurred at about 11:39 a.m. June 5 on State Route 54 in the town of Torrey.
What investigators say happened
State police said a 1999 Sterling dump truck driven by a 38-year-old Penn Yan man was traveling eastbound on Route 54 when it encountered a vehicle ahead attempting to make a left turn.
According to the preliminary investigation, the dump truck driver braked abruptly. The turning vehicle accelerated and avoided a collision, but the dump truck was unable to maintain its lane, crossed into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming 2015 Chevrolet Silverado.
The 59-year-old driver, who was the sole occupant of the Silverado, died as a result of the crash.
Dump truck driver hospitalized
Police said the dump truck driver was ejected from the vehicle during the collision.
He was taken by ambulance to Geneva General Hospital before being flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Authorities said he suffered non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.
A preliminary breath test administered to the driver yielded negative results, according to state police.
Investigation continues
Members of the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to the scene.
The roadway has since reopened, but the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
