This past weekend, USC baseball won the College Station Regional to advance to its first super regional since 2005. After dropping their tournament opener, the Trojans won four consecutive games against Lamar, Texas State, and Texas A&M (twice) to advance in the tournament.
Clearly, at least one of those schools was very impressed by what they saw from the Trojans. Earlier this week, Lamar—who USC defeated 19-6 on Saturday—named USC pitching coach Sean Allen as its new head coach.
“We are happy and grateful for Sean and all he has given to this team,” USC Head Coach Andy Stankiewicz said in a statement. “The impact he has made in the program, not just with the pitching staff but all of it, has been tremendous. We are excited for him as he will begin the next chapter of his fantastic coaching career.”
Allen has spent the past two seasons as USC’s pitching coach. Last year, he helped turn Caden Aoki into one of the top pitchers in the Big Ten. This year, Allen did even better, as Mason Edwards and Grant Govel, who entered the year having made just 13 combined starts, emerged as perhaps the top pitching duo in the country.
“There are not enough words to thank Coach Stankiewicz for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a storied program,” Allen said. “Over the past two years, I have learned so much working under him, but the most important lesson has been how to treat people the right way. He is an outstanding coach, but an even better person.
“I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to lead Lamar Baseball, but I cannot wait to do everything I can to help USC get to Omaha this weekend. Fight On and Go Cards!”
As Allen mentioned, he will remain with the Trojans through the conclusion of their postseason run. After that, however, Stankiewicz will be forced to look for a new pitching coach as he enters his fifth year leading the program.
