The field of candidates to become Wisconsin’s next governor is coming into focus after the June 1 deadline to file nomination papers and get on the ballot.
A total of nine candidates submitted nomination papers with signatures from between 2,000 and 4,000 Wisconsinites, as required under state law.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission is still reviewing those documents to ensure signatures are valid and that candidates have submitted other papers, such as a statement of economic interests.
Pending any challenges to nomination papers, WEC will certify the list of candidates at a June 9 meeting. At that point, the Aug. 11 primary ballot will be set.
Here’s where the list of candidates stands.
Who is running for governor in Wisconsin?
Here are the candidates who have submitted nomination papers with sufficient signatures. They are not guaranteed to be on the ballot until WEC meets and finalizes the list.
As of 5 p.m. June 2, six candidates’ papers have been approved, meaning that staff recommend that WEC place them on the ballot.
Kirk Bangstad, a Democrat who launched a campaign in May, failed to submit the required number of valid signatures, though he could appeal the decision.
Independent candidate David King also submitted nomination papers, but WEC staff found he had 1,731 valid signatures, below the required amount.
Which governor candidates didn’t turn in signatures?
Several candidates who announced campaigns for governor have since dropped out or failed to submit nomination papers.
That includes Republicans Bill Berrien and Josh Schoemann and Democrats Zach Roper, Ryan Strnad and Brett Hulsey.
When is the Wisconsin election for governor?
There are two important dates to mark on your calendar: Aug. 11 and Nov. 3. Both are Tuesdays.
Voters who have already requested absentee ballots for the August election could receive them as early as the end of June, based on state deadlines.
Wisconsinites can check their voter registration status, find their polling place location, view a sample ballot once it’s ready and more at myvote.wi.gov.
