Retired teacher killed in Lockport crash

A pedestrian was struck and killed over the weekend in Niagara County, according to New York State Police.

Troopers said the crash occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 29, on Sunset Drive in the Town of Lockport.

A vehicle struck a pedestrian, identified as LeRoy P. Smith, 81, of Lockport, State Police said.

Emergency responders provided medical aid, including CPR, at the scene. Smith was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigation underway

The driver, a 22-year-old Erie County man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to State Police.

No charges have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Who was LeRoy Smith?

Smith spent much of his career as a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher in the Newfane Central School District, according to his obituary.

He enjoyed gardening, hiking, boating and spending time in Maine. His obituary described him as “very dedicated to land and wildlife preservation.”

Smith is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carla.

Lockport is located about 20 miles east of Niagara Falls.
