There were 24,753 votes cast in the race for the Joe Orthodontics High School Athlete of the Week poll.
Granite Hills softball player Taylor Godwin ended with 50.39% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.
The sophomore received 12,474 votes, beating out 11 other high school athletes from across the High Desert.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Godwin went 3-for-5 with a run in a 15-4 quarterfinal victory over St. Genevieve on May 20. She followed that by hitting a solo home run in a semifinal loss to Irvine on May 23.
In the voting, Godwin beat Riverside Prep softball player America Barajas, who received 21.55% at 5,334 total votes.
The nominees were selected based on performances between May 18 to 23.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week’s games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
