The Daytona Beach Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred during the early-morning hours of May 31, at Derbyshire Park, according to a release posted to its Facebook page just before 5 p.m.
Officers responded to a local hospital after receiving reports of a gunshot victim, the release stated. While investigating, officers determined the shooting took place at Derbyshire Park.
According to preliminary findings, a man and a woman met at the park and were sitting in a parked car when an unknown man approached them. The three got into a disagreement, and the unknown man pulled out a gun. The male victim also pulled out a gun and “demanded the individual leave the area,” the release stated. The man started walking away, but turned around and fired multiple rounds, hitting the man in the car. The victim returned fire, striking the unknown man.
The couple in the car drove themselves to the hospital. Officers found the other man dead at the park.
Police said they have identified everyone involved, and there is no threat to the public.
The investigation is ongoing and the motive is still unclear, the release stated. Police are not identifying those involved until they determine “the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Police said they will release additional details as they become available.
