Florida in tug-of-war with SEC rivals for these in-state recruits

Florida football has already built one of the nation’s top 2027 recruiting classes, but the Gators aren’t finished on the trail as Jon Sumrall and staff are targeting in-state blue-chip talent to fill out their class. If the program hopes to return to SEC prominence, it must secure the Sunshine State’s best prospects.

To sign these game changers, the Gators must fend off other SEC teams scouring the state for playmakers. Two major names to watch are IMG Academy wide receiver Eric McFarland III and Jones High School edge rusher Frederick Ards. McFarland is being heavily courted by Georgia, Texas A&M and Tennessee, leaving Florida in striking distance but just outside top contention.

McFarland is one of the nation’s top skill position players, ranking No. 33 overall and No. 6 at his position according to 247Sports composite. The 5-foot-8-inch, 177-pound athlete hauled in 29 catches for 595 yards and 11 touchdowns in his junior campaign.

An Orlando native, Ards stands at 6 feet 4 inches, 220 pounds, and is ranked No. 109 overall, No. 15 at his position according to 247Sports composite. The four-star recruit totaled 80 tackles and 11 sacks last season for Jones High School. He also recorded 13 tackles for loss.
