Miami takes on Troy tonight in both teams’ opener of the NCAA baseball tournament … as long as rain doesn’t wash out the Gainesville Regional.
The Hurricanes (38-18) enter off a so-so season in conference play but still made it to the ACC tournament semifinals. Their potent offense will continue to be led by Alex Sosa, Derek Williams and Alonzo Alvarez with star third baseman Daniel Cuvet nursing a back injury for the past month. The Trojans (32-29) also boast a top-50 offense sparked by Sun Belt player of the year Jimmy Janicki, whose 17 home runs and 73 RBIs would also lead the Canes.
A pair of lefties take the mound with Miami’s Rob Evans (3.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 94 strikeouts) and Troy’s Benjamin Stubbs (5.13, 1.49, 72). The victor plays Saturday evening against the Florida-Rider winner from the afternoon game; the loser faces elimination Saturday afternoon. Florida baseball wins wild NCAA regional opener
Call it May Madness at the Gainesville Regional! The host Gators seemed to have the opener against Rider on lockdown with a four-run lead entering the eighth inning. That’s when the Broncs of the MAAC erupted for six runs off a grand slam by Anthony Paskell and a go-ahead two-run dinger by Nick Shuhet. UF went back ahead in the bottom of the inning with Caden McDonald and Cade Kurland going yard, only for shortstop Matt Leahy to tie it again with his first bomb since 2024 in the ninth. Brendan Lawson ended the fireworks show with a walk-off tater to center field to give the Gators a thrilling 8-7 win.
Florida will face the winner of Miami vs. Troy at 6 p.m. Saturday. The loser of the nightcap plays Rider at 1 p.m. in an elimination game.

NCAA baseball regional format
The NCAA baseball tournament begins with 16 four-team regionals who play a double-elimination tournament over the weekend. Each team is guaranteed to play at least two games, with the team who qualifies for the regional championship from the elimination bracket playing two games Sunday. If that team beats the entrant from the winners’ bracket, a winner-take-all game will take place Monday.
The regional champion advances to next week’s super regionals, a best-of-3 series hosted by the higher-seeded team determined by the bracket. The winner of the Gainesville Regional will face the Hattiesburg Regional’s winner. If the two regional hosts move on, No. 8 Florida would host No. 9 Southern Miss.
