The Miami Hurricanes begin their quest to return to the College World Series today against Troy in the 2026 NCAA baseball tournament.
Miami upset regional host Southern Miss last year to advance to the super regional round. Doing so again would mean taking down in-state rival Florida, who starts the action today at the Gainesville Regional against Rider. All teams have their eyes on the weather forecast as rain is expected to wash across the Sunshine State throughout the weekend; the National Weather Service gives it an 80% chance of rain with thunderstorms possible in the evening when UM is slated to take the field.
If they don’t get rained out, the Hurricanes can be expected to bring the thunder with their bats. With catcher/first baseman Alex Sosa and right fielder Derek Williams leading the way, Miami puts up 8.5 runs per game even with star Daniel Cuvet missing the past 15 games with a back injury. The third baseman, a Golden Spikes semifinalist in 2025, is not expected to play this weekend.

The Canes will turn to lefty ace Rob Evans, who brings a 3.16 ERA and a 10-3 record into the opener against Troy. The Trojans lost two of three meetings with Southern Miss in the Sun Belt tournament but still earned an at-large bid into the NCAA bracket. Conference player of the year Jimmy Janicki heads a potent lineup that averages 7.7 runs per game, while southpaw Benjamin Stubbs (4-3, 5.13 ERA) will try to contain Miami’s offense.
