A vegetation fire ignited just northwest of Newbury Park High School in Thousand Oaks on May 29, and was quickly stopped.
The blaze, dubbed the Lesser Fire, was initially reported as a 1-acre fire that sprouted around some brush near a residential neighborhood near Lesser Drive, according to initial reports. Newbury Park High School is in close vicinity.
The Ventura County Fire Department was dispatched to handle the fire, and units at the scene reported it as a half-acre fire with light to rapid fuel.
The fire department recommended evacuation orders for homes on Barcelona Place and San Telmo Circle, which were downgraded to warnings, initial reports showed. The orders were later downgraded to warnings.
As of 9:20 a.m., forward progress of the fire had stopped as firefighters established a wet line around the fire, said Andy VanSciver, a spokesperson for the fire department.
The fire comes over a week after the Sandy Fire sprouted up in Simi Valley and the Santa Rosa Island Fire ignited in the Channel Islands.
