San Francisco 49ers starting offensive tackle Colton McKivitz signed a three-year, $45 million extension with $27 million guaranteed before free agency started this offseason. And despite forgoing free agency for the chance to make more, McKivitz is happy that he gets to stay with his team instead.
He told reporters at OTAs this week that he didn’t have any regrets about signing the deal, which ranks No. 13 among offensive tackles in the league heading into 2026 by average annual value. McKivitz will make around $15 million per season.
“My goal never was to be the highest paid,” he said. “Obviously you’re in the NFL and money’s the main thing. We all want to get paid and have generational wealth… With the contract I was offered and honestly I don’t want to leave here. Obviously being cut I got some scars there, but to be cut, be a draft pick here, a gold helmet guy— whatever that means, but there was a reason why I was drafted here, why I was cut here, why I still play here and now I have had three good seasons starting and going into the fourth. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I saw a lot of guys not get paid in free agency this year. I like it here and I want to be on that 10-year wall.”
McKivitz, 29, took over as San Francisco’s starting right tackle in 2023 and played every game over the past three seasons. The 49ers originally drafted him in the fifth round in 2020, but he didn’t see extended action until his third season.
He and Trent Williams form the bookends to the 49ers’ offensive line with Jake Brendel at center and Dominick Puni at right guard. While the left guard spot is technically up for grabs, Connor Colby seems to be in line to take over at the position.
