Aaron Philo projected to open season as Florida's starting QB

Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo is projected by Sports Illustrated to earn the starting quarterback role for the Gators this fall.

The outlet cited his familiarity with former Yellow Jackets offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner’s system as a tactical advantage for the redshirt sophomore. Philo threw for 373 yards during limited snaps in Atlanta but was praised internally for his efficiency.

Florida’s quarterback battle remains the biggest question looming over Jon Sumrall’s program entering 2026. National sentiment surrounding the Gators’ completely overhauled roster, two new lead coordinators, and first-year head coach has grown largely optimistic.

To make it all come together, though, Florida will need reliable play under center.

SI’s Zach Koons said, “Philo turned in a mixed bag in the spring game, starting off poorly with two interceptions before going 9-for-10 for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Though a decision will be made off of more than one high-profile scrimmage, Jones was much cleaner and could continue his rise into the starting gig with a strong start to fall camp.”

While Philo is anticipated to win the starting nod over freshman Tramell Jones Jr., SI describes Florida’s quarterback confidence level as “low,” with Jones Jr. trialling Philo by inches instead of feet. The 6-foot, 203-pound Jacksonville, Florida, native comes in as a highly touted four-star prospect with elite athleticism, which he put on display during the Gators’ Orange and Blue game.
