HILTON – Section V’s high school softball playoffs promised quality pitching.
Through two-plus rounds, that’s precisely what we’ve seen.
As a result, Wayland-Cohocton, Wellsville, Fillmore and Avoca-Prattsburgh are all moving on to the Section V finals in their respective brackets.
One of Section V’s pitchers’ duels pitted Lola Rivera and top-seeded Northstar Christian (15-2) against Mylee Miller and No. 4 Fillmore (13-5) in the Class D1 semifinals. This time, Miller and the defending Section V champs enjoyed the last proverbial laugh.
Miller tossed a five-hit, 14-strikeout shutout at Grace and Truth Park. That was enough to beat Rivera’s 16 strikeouts and three hits allowed in a matchup of standout juniors.
Miller added an RBI and two runs scored while Fillmore senior Morghyn Ross recorded her 200th career hit in the 3-0 win. This result headlined local softball action on Tuesday, May 26. Fillmore advanced to face No. 2 Oakfield-Alabama in Friday’s championship game in Livonia at 5 p.m.
In other semifinal softball action, No. 1 Wayland-Cohocton cruised by North Rose-Wolcott 13-1 in Class B1 and will now face No. 2 Waterloo on Friday at 5 p.m. at Gates-Chili.
In Class B2, No. 2 Wellsville defeated LeRoy 8-1 and will now defend its title against No. 5 Avon at Gates-Chili at 7:30 p.m.
In Class D2, No. 2 Avoca-Prattsburgh got past Elba 9-5 and will now face No. 1 Lyndonville for the title at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Livonia.
