Why Peoria air quality is forecast to be unhealthy Wednesday

Air quality in the Peoria area is forecast to be unhealthy Wednesday, May 27, thanks to a front coming from the northeast pushing higher concentrations of ozone into the area.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln said that the air quality index for Peoria will be between 101-150 Wednesday, considered to be unhealthy for sensitive groups. Those include people with asthma, children and teens, older adults and people who are active outdoors for more than six hours a day.

The weather service said that a front coming from the Chicago area will bring higher concentrations of ozone toward Peoria and much of central Illinois, including Bloomington and Champaign.

While air quality will be unhealthy for those sensitive to the conditions, the general public is less likely to be affected at this time. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s AirNow website, sensitive groups should reduce their exposure by choosing something less strenuous outside or reducing the time they spend outdoors. They also recommend checking current air quality throughout the day, as there may be times where the risk will be lessened.

Overall, Wednesday is shaping up to be relatively warm weather-wise, according to NWS, with a high temperature of 86 degrees under mostly sunny skies forecast for Peoria.
