Has five months been enough time to fix the Dallas Cowboys defense? They’ve done a bunch this offseason, but one prominent Cowboys insider thinks there could be another name to add at the linebacker position.
Alas, he doesn’t give that name, but other people have. And whatever happened to that blockbuster trade for Myles Garrett that never happened? Well, it never happened, but Garrett has popped up in the news.
Cowboys fans, meanwhile, can make their plans to see whatever Dallas is putting on the field in its opener at New York, as tickets are moving. Here is what Dallas is up to.
Dallas Cowboys linebacker
Finding more linebackers for defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s 3-4 scheme was once of the biggest priorities for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, and indeed during the draft they traded for Dee Winters and then drafted Jaishawn Barham.
There is also hope DeMarvion Overshown, who has been good when healthy, can stay healthy, though two injuries in two years are concerning.
That all counts as a significant upgrade, but The Athletic’s Jon Machota thinks there could be another move at the position. He went on the Cowboys Collective podcast to give his take on it.
He said, “Overshown is a guy that I kind of think is a little forgotten sometimes because of the injuries, and if he can stay healthy, he would be a really interesting piece to all of this, because I still maintain that inside linebacker spot to me, I just don’t think it’s done there yet. I still think there’s another move to be made there, whether it be before training camp or right before the season starts.”
But who? One name that comes up often is free agent linebacker Bobby Wagner. The New York Post’s Ryan Dunleavy came up with a list of top free agents still available and said the best fits for Wagner, who was with the Washington Commanders last year, are the Commanders, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals and the Cowboys.
He writes: “A Wagner-Cowboys pairing has long been rumored. But Wagner, 35, could have the biggest on-field impact — not just as a leader — roaming behind newly acquired double-team-eating Dexter Lawrence with the Bengals. Wagner notched 162 tackles last season, after making his 10th career Pro Bowl in 2024.”
Alijah Clark Dallas Cowboys special teams
One of the feel-good stories for Dallas in 2025 was the special teams play of gunner Alijah Clark, who Dallas gave $259,000 in guaranteed money to mostly to created havoc on punt coverage. Indeed, against Philadelphia he made one of the viral plays of the year for the Cowboys when he got knocked down, got back up and went down and forced a fumble.
The USA Today’s Dallas Cowboys wire has a feature out on him looking at his chances of making the roster again this year.
Reid D Hanson writes: “At 6-foot-1, 187 pounds, Clark isn’t the most imposing prospect on the roster, but in an area such as special teams it’s every bit about tenacity and effort as it is about physical ability. Clark will be facing competition from the likes of Markquese Bell, Reddy Steward, Caelen Carson, Trikweze Bridges and Zion Childress for the Cowboys’ last roster spot.”
Myles Garrett
One of the stranger storylines of the offseason has been the future of Cleveland Browns superstar Myles Garrett, who turned in one of the most dominant defensive seasons in NFL history in 2025, then had his contract restructured that could theoretically make him easier to trade.
Of course Dallas was immediately linked to getting the Arlington native, even “trading” for him in one mock draft. All of this doesn’t appear to be much more than wishful thinking, but Garrett is in the news again after skipping Cleveland’s OTAs, and appearing in a commercial for a Chase Sapphire credit card with his girlfriend Chloe Kim and Ted Lasso actress Juno Temple.
This was enough to get Dallas Cowboys fans doing Google searches on him, but alas, all the rumors linking him to Dallas are months old.
