Lakers hire 'literal rocket scientist' to be assistant general manager

The revamping process of the Los Angeles Lakers’ front office, which began several months ago when Mark Walter bought a majority share of the franchise, is continuing.

A couple of weeks ago, general manager and president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka told the media that the franchise would be looking to hire two assistant general managers to handle specific roles. On Monday, the Lakers brought in Rohan Ramadas to fill one of those assistant general manager roles.

Ramadas had previously been the New Orleans Pelicans’ vice president of basketball operations and strategy. Per Dave McMenamin and Shams Charania of ESPN, Ramadas is a very smart fellow.

“After graduating from the University of Southern California, Ramadas spent more than a decade with the Aerospace Corporation before his first opportunity in the NBA with New Orleans,” McMenamin and Charania wrote.

“‘He’s a literal rocket scientist,’ a Pelicans source told ESPN.

“While working for the Pelicans, Ramadas implemented AI and coded models to aid the front office, the source told ESPN.”

According to Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the Los Angeles Times, Ramadas will be tasked with handling the salary cap, analytics and data in his new role with the Lakers.

He will join other newcomers such as Andrew Friedman, Farhan Zaidi, Tony Bennett and Lon Rosen in the Lakers’ front office. The days of the franchise being run like a mom-and-pop shop, something that drew lots of criticism for years, are over.
