Analyzing and predicting South Bend area IHSAA softball sectionals

There are seven South Bend Tribune coverage area softball sectionals across all four IHSAA classes, with 23 coverage area programs vying for championships.

On the surface, it doesn’t look like too many surprises should be in store, with programs like Penn, Elkhart, South Bend Saint Joseph and Fairfield heading into the state tournament as heavy favorites.

However, teams like Jimtown, Glenn and Mishawaka have proved to be more than competitive this season and could push their field’s favorites to the limit on the right day. So, let’s predict which squads will bring home sectional glory and which team they’ll beat in the championship game to do so.

Class 4A

Sectional 3 (at Penn)

Championship: Penn beats Mishawaka

The Kingsmen have won 11 straight sectional championships, but the Cavemen won the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) with a perfect 14-0 record and head into sectional play with a sterling 20-5 overall mark.

However, Penn has proved to be one of the best teams in the state this season, winning the Northern Indiana Conference (NIC) with a spotless 12-0 record and beginning the state tournament at 24-3. When the Kingsmen battled Mishawaka in the regular season, the former won 12-0. Don’t expect much of a difference when it’s win or go home.

Sectional 4 (at Northridge)

Championship: Elkhart beats Northridge

The Lions and Raiders are the only teams in this sectional with winning records, but the former is a class above even the latter. Elkhart is 20-7 and went 10-2 in NIC play, even taking Penn to the limit in a 6-5 loss.

When the Lions played Northridge in the regular season, it was a 17-4 blowout. Led by junior Ava Walker, expect Elkhart to win its second straight sectional crown this time around.

Class 3A

Sectional 19 (at Plymouth)

Championship: South Bend Saint Joseph beats Glenn

The Falcons are the defending champions in this field, and they enter play with an 18-9 record. They would have to beat the hosting Pilgrims (15-9) to get back to the title game, but it’s unlikely Glenn could make it back to the regional round with Saint Joseph standing in its way.

The Huskies are TBD (17-8) and have consistently been ranked as one of the 12 best teams in 3A this season. With junior Bella Esquibel on the mound, Saint Joseph should get back to sectional glory after winning four straight championships from 2021-24.

Sectional 20 (at NorthWood)

Championship: Fairfield beats Tippecanoe Valley

The Falcons have not won a sectional championship since 2021, and they’ll have to win three games to do so this season. Their 20-6 record and Northeast Corner Conference (NECC) Championship proves that should change. In fact, Fairfield has faced and beaten every team in this sectional field aside from Columbia City.

The Eagles could advance to the championship game if they can beat Tippecanoe Valley for the second time this season, but look for the Vikings to get revenge after losing just 4-3 in the regular season. However, the Falcons’ 17-12 win over Tippy in the regular season proves they should have no trouble a second time around with a trophy on the line.

Class 2A

Sectional 34 (at Bremen)

Championship: Winamac beats Jimtown

It’ll be tough for the Jimmies to even reach the championship game, let alone win it, as they’ll most likely have to face Indiana Northern State Conference (INSC) runners-up Knox in a semifinal. However, Jimtown is the INSC champion, with its only league loss coming to Knox in a 10-1 defeat later avenged with a 12-2 win.

The Jimmies have won seven of their last nine games, with both losses only coming via one run. Expect them to win the rubber match against Knox, but fall against the 20-2 Winamac Warriors, who capture their first sectional title since 2017.

Class 1A

Sectional 49 (at Washington Township)

Championship: Kouts beats Washington Township

The Fillies would surely be one of the only sectional champions with a losing record in the entire state, but that seems to be the best pick in a relatively middling field. The host Senators have the best record of the field, but Kouts beat them 11-5 in the regular season.

This would be Kouts’ fifth sectional championship in program history and its first since 2023.

Sectional 51 (at South Central)

Championship: South Central beats Triton

The bottom of this bracket is loaded with the three most likely title contenders in Culver, North Judson-San Pierre and South Central, while the top guarantees one of three teams with a losing record will make a championship game appearance.

The host Satellites would have to beat both the Bluejays and Cavaliers to even advance to the championship game, but with a home field and crowd on their side, expect them to run the gauntlet and successfully defend their crown from last season.
