Gus’s Carry Out is killing two birds with one stone in downtown Howell, relocating to a new build while demolishing a gas station that’s long been an eyesore — according to reporting from WHMI.
Elia Nicholas, owner at Gus’s, reportedly confirmed the company’s purchase of the old gas station property at 401 E. Grand River Ave. He told the outlet the family will demolish the old building, remove the underground fuel tanks, and complete a new build with more parking and space — hopefully within a year.
The business will relocate from a longtime location at 210 W. Grand River Ave. — which will be converted into “something different” but yet undecided, according to WHMI.
The old gas station property, meant to become Howell Gas & More, has sat abandoned for more than a decade. FPD Properties owner Fadi Kajy purchased the site in 2014, for years insisting he had plans to rehabilitate and reopen, but aside from efforts to remedy unsafe conditions, that redevelopment never happened. At most recent report, the city was considering forcibly razing the station.
Nicholas and his family are the creators behind several other beloved restaurants, including Highland House, Tomato Brothers and E.G. Nicks Grill & Tavern.
