79-year-old dies three days after car crash in Rome

A 79-year-old Rome woman involved in a crash on May 17 succumbed to her injuries and died three days later, according to a statement from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 5:32 p.m. on May 17, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office received a call for a single car motor vehicle crash on Rome Westernville Road, near Golf Course Road, in the city of Rome.

Upon deputies arrival, it was determined that a 2017 Honda HRV was traveling in a southerly direction on Rome Westernivlle Road when the vehicle veered into the northbound lane, drove off of the eastern shoulder of the roadway and struck an embankment which caused the vehicle to flip over end over end multiple times before coming to rest.

Both occupants of the vehicle sustained serious physical injuries.

The operator was identified as Philip Spinelli, 85, of Rome who was transported to Upstate University Hospital, via Mercy Flight for further evaluation. The passenger was identified as Jean Spinelli, 79, of Rome, who was transported to Rome Hospital, via AmCare Ambulance for further evaluation.

According to a statement from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, the passenger, Jean Spinelli, who was transported to Rome Hospital with serious physical injuries has since succumbed to those injuries.

Law enforcement said the investigation into the cause of the accident is still ongoing and that more information may be released at a later time.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s was assisted on scene by members of the NYSP, Mercy Flight, AmCare Ambulance, Lake Delta Fire Department, Rome Fire Department and North Country Towing.
