Texas A&M's starting QB has added weight this offseason

This offseason, Texas A&M’s 2026 roster began to gel during the spring season, while the Maroon & White Game served as the first opportunity for Aggie fans to watch the 17 transfer portal additions, and several freshmen from the 2026 signing class took the field for a full scrimmage.

Outside of having to replace four starting offensive linemen, one of the bigger offseason questions is redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed’s improvement track after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, while his 12 interceptions, including four in losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff, prove that he is still a work in progress.

However, working with first-year quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch, who has known Reed since he was a junior in high school, Texas A&M’s starting signal-caller isn’t just focused on fixing his footwork in the pocket and processing skill set, especially in close games; adding healthy weight this offseason is another focus that has been underreported.

Back in Nashville, Tennessee, this summer, Reed has been putting in the hours both on the field and at the gym, and has worked out at D1 Training, which specializes in working with current or future college athletes looking to increase their speed and add strength. For Reed, adding more muscle to his rather thin frame will aid in the redshirt junior being able to take more hits, especially in designed runs.

Thanks to D1 Training’s X page, you can now see that Marcel Reed has put on some muscle, while his front squat personal record has likely improved, building a stronger lower body that will further aid in his ability to break tackles.
