Rams have prime candidates for joint practices this preseason

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is a big fan of preseason joint practices. McVay feels that those sessions against another team mimic enough live-action football within a controlled environment to toughen his squad, while also fine-tuning their operation.

In 2025, the Rams participated in joint practices with the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints. The Cowboys, who hold training camp in Oxnard, California, typically play the Rams in the preseason. That will not happen this year. The Rams are set to play the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, and the Saints in the preseason.

Still, the Rams shouldn’t have much trouble scheduling joint practices this summer.

Last year, the Rams and the Saints held their practice in Carson, California. That was after the Chargers suffered too many injuries and had to pull out of their scheduled practice with the Rams. The Rams pivoted, setting up a practice with the Saints before playing the Chargers in the preseason.

In Week 3 of the preseason, the Rams played the Cleveland Browns. The Rams attempted to practice with the Browns, but Cleveland declined. The Rams then attempted to practice with the Minnesota Vikings, but logistics prevented that from coming to fruition.

The Rams already have three prime candidates in their preseason opponents, as well as connections with the Cowboys, who practice an hour away from the Rams. They also have the entire McVay coaching tree to call on.

With a difficult schedule looming, McVay needs his players to be battle-ready, and joint practices accomplish that. Considering the Rams’ preference for them in the past, expect the team to hold several joint practices this summer.
