Retired New York Giants linebacker Brandon Short shared a poignant update on social media Sunday regarding the long-awaited trial in the 2021 murder of his daughter, Karli Short.
The 26-year-old was five months pregnant when she was fatally shot on a McKeesport, Pennsylvania, street on September 13, 2021. Authorities later charged Isaac Smith, the father of her unborn son, with the killing.
Short announced the loss on Facebook, describing Karli as the “light of my life” and mourning both his daughter and grandson in a senseless act of gun violence.
In response to the tragedy, Short established the Karli Short Better Tomorrow Scholarship in 2022. The endowment supports financially needy students at Penn State Greater Allegheny who have been affected by gun violence, turning personal grief into a legacy of hope.
The trial, which had been postponed several times, is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 19, and is expected to last about two weeks.
Through continued advocacy and the scholarship established in her name, Karli’s legacy lives on as a beacon of resilience, education, and community healing. The coming weeks mark a significant step toward justice for a young mother and her unborn child whose lives were taken far too soon.
