A teenager who was one of three people opening fire on a crowd in Mount Vernon last year – with one of the others fatally shooting the third by accident – has pleaded guilty after a judge promised to adjudicate him as a youthful offender.
The defendant, who turned 17 last week, pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon on Thursday, May 14. Westchester Judge Sheralyn Pulver said she would sentence him to five years of probation.
The Journal News/lohud is not naming the teen because of his age. The youthful offender status means he will not have a criminal conviction on his record.
On the night of Nov. 21, 2025, the teen was with Assam Alshaif and Jaydin Maraj as they ran on Eastchester Lane firing behind them at a residential parking lot. A bullet from Alshaif’s gun struck Maraj in the head as they neared Mundy Lane. Maraj, 17, died at the scene, two blocks from his home in the Bronx.
Alshaif, 21, was identified as the suspect but before he could be arrested he was fatally shot in the Bronx on March 26 in apparent retaliation for the Maraj killing. Jadore Reid, 18, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in Alshaif’s killing.
The teen who pleaded guilty Thursday in Westchester had been held in a juvenile detention facility since his arrest in February. Pulver released him to his mother, but ordered him to wear an ankle monitor and be home each night by 9 pm. She scheduled sentencing for Aug. 27.
