Beloved Kona Ice Tallahassee announces new ownership

It’s a bittersweet day for Tallahassee’s foodies as the owners of the popular gourmet shaved ice food truck Kona Ice announced that new owners will be taking over operations in the capital city.

Kona Ice Tallahassee owners Derick and Jenna Polston announced their departure in a Facebook post the evening of Monday, May 11

“Kona Ice of Tallahassee has officially been sold!” it stated. “While this chapter is coming to an end for me, I truly believe the new owners will continue serving this community with the same heart and care you deserve, and now with 4 trucks + smoothies!”

No worries, they’ll still be in attendance for all of the end-of-year school events this May as they transition out. A customer appreciation event is currently in the works as well, with more details to come.

Longtime patrons, heartbroken by the news shared well wishes for the owners as they move on to their next adventure and their gratitude for the couples years of service.

One user said “You have truly been an asset to our community. I am so thankful for the privilege to have gotten to know you over the years. Seeing the same familiar face at all of our events has truly made you a part of them. We appreciate you and your family so much!! Much love to you all on your next adventure!”

Another user said, “Kona Ice was always there with an icy treat to cool us down in this Florida sun. And no matter who was behind the window, my cup was always served with a smile, and friendliness sweeter than the syrup bar! Best wishes for the road ahead and thank you for gifting us 8 wonderful years. We will continue supporting the new owners…because at this point we’re addicted!”

More on Kona Ice Tallahassee

Over eight years ago, Derick Polston left his hometown in Kentucky “and drove 700 miles to Tallahassee with a dream and a Kona Ice truck.”

After gaining experience at a franchise location back home, he decided to continue the journey in Florida.

“Somewhere along the way, being “the Kona Ice guy” became one of the greatest joys of my life,” he said in the post.

Since then, Polston became a pillar and friendly face at all your school, church and fundraising events — always arriving in one of his vibrant, tropical‑themed trucks and serving up gourmet shaved ice.
