Kayden McDonald might be a rookie, but his goals for 2026 with the Houston Texans come from a veteran presence.
McDonald, the Texans’ second-round pick out of Ohio State, made it known he holds himself to a high standard after one practice with the rest of the rookies at minicamp. While most rookies just want to get acclimated with the NFL in Year 1, the 6-foot-2 defensive tackle wants to change the way people look at him playing in a DeMeco Ryans’ defense.
“Win a Super Bowl, Rookie of the Year, All-Pro first year,” McDonald told reporters when asked about his goals Friday afternoon. “These are realistic for me. I wrote these down and I’m blessed to be here and I’ve got a chance.”
The Texans are high on McDonald’s potential. They must be, since they traded away a third-round pick to move up two spots in the second round to select him. Even though there was a chance he could have fell past the New York Giants, general manager Nick Caserio and head coach DeMeco Ryans weren’t waiting to play a guessing game.
It didn’t take long for the tape to stand out for Ryans to realize that a player with McDonald’s potential could be a find for the franchise’s run toward its first-ever Super Bowl appearance.
“When he’s across the line from an offensive lineman, no matter who it was, he was knocking those guys back in the backfield,” Ryans said. “That translates to Houston Texans defense.
“He’s still a very young player who has so much room to grow, so much room to ascend. It starts right here today. You see him in his individual drills. He has the power. We can win with that type of power.”
McDonald, who was considered a first-round talent and a top two defensive tackle prospect, comes with the production to warrant immediate reps. As the anchor of Ohio State’s defensive line, the unanimous All-American finished with 65 tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles as the Buckeyes secured an undefeated regular season and College Football Playoff berth.
Since being selected, McDonald has said that there’s not a single player drafted ahead of him that’s better. He’ll have a chance to meet that standard while opening running lanes for All-Pro defensive end Will Anderson Jr. and Pro Bowler Danielle Hunter on Sundays.
And yes, he already knows what the assignement is on the first play of the game.
“I got to help out the defensive ends, get them to second and long, get them to third and long, let Will and Danielle and all the other guys get off the edge,” McDonald said. “It’s going to work out. Three and out, get off the field, give it back to C.J. and go score.”
The Texans will return to the field as a team for volunatry workouts at the end of the month.
