After having first opened 30 years ago in Tallahassee, Sado Mori Japanese Steak House has turned off the hibachi grill for the last time.
The eatery’s owners, in “A Heartfelt Thank You” post on Facebook to customers on May 7, said the business had closed permanently as of May 3. It had always been in the shopping center on Sharer Road, just off North Monroe Street.
A person who answered the phone at the restaurant confirmed the closure but didn’t answer any other questions.
“This wasn’t an easy decision, but as we look back, we are filled with nothing but gratitude,” the post said. “Thank you for letting us be a part of your daily lives, celebrations, and meals. You made all our hard work worth it.”
The late Tallahassee Democrat restaurant reviewer and food writer Ashby Stiff wrote about Mori when it first opened in 1996, marveling that “every wooden decorative effect of the minimalist Asian design had been custom titled and hand crafted. Not your usual job of work for local restaurant interiors.”
He added, “Mori is a hibachi house … a sprawling complex of rooms where foods are prepared on grills set into dining counters. Surrounded by strangers, and seated in a row, one leaves it to the cooking, not conversation, to be the entertaining adjunct to the meal.”
Fans on Facebook paid their last respects.
“Thank you for serving the best sushi in Tallahassee. Anyone who has never tried (it) missed out big time. We always went here for big celebrations and loved it every time. I will definitely miss it!” one person wrote.
Another said simply, “A true loss to the Tallahassee community.”
