Red Raiders hold on for a much needed win over Dallas Baptist

Tim Tadlock’s team did not improve its Big 12 tournament position after Tuesday’s game. But the Red Raiders (24-24, 7-17 in the Big 12) have to be feeling good about stringing back-to-back wins together. DBU (28-21, 16-8 in Conference USA) came to Lubbock to finish the second half of a mid-week home-and-home with Texas Tech.

The home team came out with their “Guns Up” with multiple runs in the opening two innings. However, it was not all smooth sailing for the rest of the game. The Patriots’ comeback efforts came up just short as the final homestand of the season for this Texas Tech baseball team started with a 9-7 victory.

The start of the game looked familiar

Texas Tech grabbed control of the game early thanks to a pair of two-run home runs from Logan Hughes and Caden Ferraro. The homer for Hughes was his 14th of the season. It was also his 33rd career home run, hitting the mark in his 100th career game with the Red Raiders. In total, the Red Raiders would put up eight runs in the first two innings. Texas Tech would plate its final run of the game in the 4th off the bat of Hughes again. This time, it was a double that would add to his three RBIs in the game. However, the bats went to sleep after the 4th, scoring zero runs and registering zero hits.

Pitching showed up enough

Coming into this game (and really the story for the rest of this season), the pitchers needed to be at least one level above a pitching machine on the mound. Red Raiders Wire already broke down that despite having a top-10 national offense, Texas Tech could never overcome games in which the pitching was a no-show. But the pitching was doing its job until some timely errors let the Patriots back into the game. It was 9-1 until the sixth when a two-out fielding error placed two runners on with two out for DBU. The next batter, Dylan Schlaegel, connected for a three-run home run to cut the Tech lead to 9-4.

Another error in the seventh inning allowed DBU to crawl closer in the seventh. It put two runners on with two outs for the catcher, Mac Rose, who blasted his second home run of the game to bring the score within two runs. The final inning saw DBU get two runners on before the game ended, getting Rose to strike out. The Red Raiders will be back in action Thursday when they begin a critical three-game series against the Cougars from BYU.
