Detroit — With injuries popping up at both the big-league and Triple-A levels, the Tigers added some veteran infield depth Tuesday.
The club signed 32-year-old journeyman Paul DeJong to a minor league deal. He is expected to report to Toledo.
Organizationally, the Tigers have been without shortstop Trey Sweeney (shoulder) and Trei Cruz (undisclosed). At the big-league level, utility players Zach McKinstry (hip/abdomen) is close to returning, but Javier Báez (ankle) is not.
Also, second baseman Gleyber Torres (side discomfort) has not been put on the injured list, but he was still unavailable even to pinch-hit Monday night.
The Tigers added infielder Zack Short to the roster on Sunday to help fill the void.
DeJong was playing for the Yankees Triple-A affiliate (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) this season, hitting .203 with a .516 slugging percentage, with six home runs in 23 games. He has a .710 OPS over nine big-league seasons, the last with the Nationals last year.
