For the latest photo challenge, readers found visual excitement by adding the color yellow to their compositions. Yellow is a bright and vibrant color that catches the eye.
From lemon to saffron, 13 readers sent in 56 photos representing various shades of yellow. Here are the top picks.
Bret Parker of Stockton photographed a blossom of a Bush Anemone plant at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in Mission Canyon.
With a Google Pixel 6A smartphone he got in very close so that the entire bloom fills the frame. He captured the subtle detail of the pure white petals of the flower and the water drops lining to them. At the center is the lemon-yellow of the flower’s stamens. A bee searching for nectar adds a different shade of yellow to add even more visual interest.
Dave Skinner of Stockton practices some street photography for is entry. He photographed what looks like a single building on California Street and Miner Avenue in downtown Stockton but is actually two structures painted the same shade of pale yellow.
The telephoto effect of his zoom lens set at 75mm on his Nikon D7100 DSLR camera adds to the illusion of it being a single building. The grey roof of the first building and the windows of the second helps to keep it from looking like a large yellow monolith. A decorative light pole is slightly offset to the left of center. The addition of a pedestrian on the right helps to balance the scene. The blue of the sky at the top and the green grass growing in an empty lot and the different shades of gray of the street and sidewalk at the bottom add layers to the composition.
Cynthia Barker of Stockton caught her cat Baloo napping on the back of a couch in her home office.
With an Apple iPhone 14 she photographed the cat sleeping on a loosely woven blanket on the sofa Its weight creates a V-shaped depression between cushions as it nestles between them. Gentle window light illuminates the scene. The yellow wall behind the cat is in shade which turns it to a rich gold color.
Pedro Tinaco of Stockton shows how the time of day can affect the quality of light and change the look of things. He used a Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphone to photograph the Ebenezer Methodist Church in downtown Stockton during sunset.
The warm tone of the setting sun turned the church’s normally white walls to a pleasing yellow. Dramatic clouds fill the sky adding majesty to the scene.
Joan Erreca of Stockton found her source of yellow at her local supermarket. In the organic produce section at the Safeway in Stockton, she photographed yellow bell peppers on display with an Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The peppers were a bright yellow while the word “organic” on the clear plastic tray keeping them on the shelf added a different shade of chartreuse yellow to the scene.
For first place Parker receives a 16×20 print from Ulmerphoto in Stockton are well as a $25 gift certificate from a local restaurant. Second goes to Skinner which comes with a 11x 14 print. Barker gets am 8×10 print for third. All of the photos sent in can be seen in an online gallery at recordnet.com. A new challenge will be issued on May 12.
