Florida basketball and coach Todd Golden have landed a commitment from an impressive international prospect.
The Gators signed Slovenian forward Domen Petrovic on Monday, May 4. The 6-foot-9 forward most recently played for GGD Sencur in Slovenia, where he averaged 16.6 points with 6.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game on 57.4% shooting and a 39.5% mark from 3-point range.
Petrovic was teammates with Florida guard Urban Klavzar at the 2024 FIBA U20 EuroBasket with Slovenia, and averaged 9.7 points to help his country to a silver medal at the tournament.
“We are really excited to welcome Domen into our program,” Golden said in the announcement. “He is a very skilled forward that has great positional size. He has shown incremental improvement every year, and he’s currently playing the best basketball of his young career. He is a high-achiever both on and off the court and will help us continue to raise the bar here at Florida!”
Petrovic joins forward Arturas Butajevas from Lithuania as Florida’s most-recent international signees, a route the Gators have embraced since Golden took over as head coach.
Florida has been one of the biggest winners of the transfer portal so far this offseason, despite adding just one player in former Florida guard Denzel Aberdeen, who left for Kentucky for one season before returning to Gainesville. The Gators were able to retain forwards Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh, their leading scorer las season.
Starting guard Boogie Fland is also returning for his third season, and starting center Rueben Chinyelu could still return, although he’s currently going through the NBA draft process. Florida only lost two players via the transfer portal in reserve centers Olivier Rioux and Micah Handlogten.
Petrovic, 22, has the upside to develop into a college star for the Gators.
