Fairport brawl erupts after paramedic is attacked, deputies say two charged

Two people were charged after a paramedic was assaulted while providing care to a patient in the Village of Fairport over the weekend, followed by a large brawl in the village.

Sean Sullivan, 44, of Victor, Ontario County, was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, in connection with Saturday’s incident, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Sullivan was taken to Monroe County CAP Court and was arraigned, deputies said. He was remanded to the Monroe County Jail and since posted bail.

Also as a result of the incident, Branden Scott, 20, of Penfield, was charged with third-degree assault, and obstruction of governmental administration, both misdemeanors, deputies said. He was issued an appearance ticket.

What was the initial call?

The incident occurred on North Main Street in the village, about a block north of the Lift Bridge. Emergency responders – including Fairport police officers and Perinton Ambulance workers were called to the area just before 1 a.m. to check on the welfare of a man. They all arrived at the scene and found a man – Sullivan – in need of medical assistance, said Deputy David Marcucci. He was moved into an ambulance.

What happened in the ambulance?

Sullivan is accused of striking the paramedic in the upper body multiple times.

According to a news release from Perinton Ambulance, the agency confirmed that the encounter took place during patient care and that the paramedic was evaluated, treated and released. They did not release further details about the incident or injured paramedic.

“This was a difficult day for our organization,” said Robert Cieri, Director of Operations for Perinton Ambulance. “Our crews work to help people on their worst days. Violence toward EMS professionals is unacceptable.”

Large fight on North Main Street

While Fairport police were investigating the encounter in the ambulance, a large fight erupted on North Main Street, shortly after 2 a.m., Marcucci said. Deputies were called to the scene since roughly 50 people were involved in the fight and Fairport police were still investigating the assault involving the paramedic.

Deputies found an unconscious man on the ground at the scene. Multiple people in the area ignored deputies commands to disperse, Marcucci said. One man was repeatedly punching others others on the sidewalk in the area, according to sheriff’s deputies.

That man – later identified at Brandon Scott – repeatedly refused to comply with demands to stop and was apprehended by deputies with “a minor use of force,” Marcucci said. He was evaluated at the scene and refused medical treatment.

More on the fight

Additional deputies were on the scene early Saturday “working to preserve public safety and identify victims of the fight in need of medical attention,” Marcucci said.

Fairport police and Monroe County sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the incident and are aware of videos circulating on social media that show portions of the brawl.

What’s next?

Additional charges are pending.

Anyone with information about the fight is asked to contact the Fairport Police Department at (585) 223-1740.
