King Charles III to visit NYC this week. Here’s what’s planned

Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to arrive in the United States on Monday for a four-day visit marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, with planned stops in Washington, D.C., New York City and Virginia.

The trip — which includes a meeting with President Donald Trump, an address to Congress and a visit to the Sept. 11 memorial — comes just days after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ dinner heightened security concerns.

Buckingham Palace said the trip would still go ahead as planned following discussions between British and U.S. authorities to determine if the incident would impact on the royals’ plans.

“The king and queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the visit getting underway tomorrow,” a palace spokesperson said on Sunday.

The trip marks the first official U.S. visit by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II traveled to the country in 2007.

The New York City stop will highlight “the modern U.K.-U.S. relationship through culture, community and economic growth,” according to the royal family.

When will King Charles and Queen Camilla visit the U.S.?

King Charles and Queen Camilla are scheduled to be in the United States from April 27 to April 30. The trip begins in Washington, D.C., where they are expected to meet with President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the White House.

Planned events include a private tea, a garden party, a ceremonial military review and a bilateral meeting between the king and the president. Queen Camilla and the first lady are also expected to meet separately, USA Today reported. King Charles is also scheduled to deliver a rare address to Congress on April 28 before traveling to New York City.

What are the planned stops in New York City?

While in New York, the royal couple is expected to visit the National September 11 Memorial, where the king will meet with first responders and families of victims. The visit is expected to include a wreath-laying ceremony alongside former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other officials, according to a Politico report.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was invited to the ceremony, but the mayor’s team did not confirm his attendance.

“The mayor will not meet privately with King Charles,” spokesperson Joe Calvello said in a statement to the USA Today New York Connect Team on Saturday. “He was invited to join a number of New York elected officials next week at a wreath laying at the 9/11 memorial with members of the British royal family.”

The event comes ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

King Charles is also expected to visit a grassroots organization that supports children and young people affected by food insecurity through a sustainable urban farming program. Queen Camilla is expected to attend an event celebrating the United States’ and United Kingdom’s shared love of literature, according to a USA Today report.

A rare royal visit to New York

The trip marks the first visit to New York City by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II visited in 2010. It comes at a time of heightened global attention on the U.S.-U.K. relationship.

What to expect during the visit

Security is expected to be tight throughout the visit, though specific locations and timing for public appearances have not been fully disclosed.

After leaving New York, the royal couple is scheduled to travel to Virginia before concluding their trip.
