Strong winds are expected to continue in the Coachella Valley and beyond through most of Sunday, April 26.
The National Weather Service extended a wind advisory to 5 p.m., Sunday. The advisory had previously been expected to end Sunday morning.
The extension opens up the prospect that the Stagecoach country music festival underway at the Empire Polo Club in Indio may be struck with strong wind gusts similar to those that caused the festival to be evacuated Saturday night.
Now, NWS says sustained west winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour are possible, with gusts up to 45 miles per hour expected.
“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects,” the advisory said. “Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Locally reduced visibility in blowing dust.”
Impacted areas include the Apple and Lucerne Valleys, Coachella Valley, San Diego County deserts and the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning.
Driving may be difficult, NWS warned, especially for high-profile vehicles.
