49ers trade breakout starting LB to Dallas Cowboys

The San Francisco 49ers are trading linebacker Dee Winters to the Dallas Cowboys for a fifth-round pick according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported the 49ers will receive the best of Dallas’s three fifth-round selections. It’s the 152nd overall pick.

It’s not a huge surprise the 49ers dealt Winters. They entered the draft looking to acquire more picks and Winters became expendable when the 49ers drafted Nick Martin last year and then re-signed Dre Greenlaw this offseason.

Winters started all 17 games for the 49ers last season and was one of the bright spots on their defense that struggled down the stretch. It looked like he might have worked his way in to a long-term starting role, but Greenlaw’s return put the writing on the wall that Winters could be headed elsewhere this offseason.

The 49ers fetched another fifth-round pick in the deal, bringing them up to eight selections in this year’s draft, including two in the fifth round. They acquired their other fifth-round pick in a trade back with the New York Jets on Day 1 of the draft.
