DETROIT – The Milwaukee Brewers will have a major challenge on their hands as they close out their interleague series against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on Thursday afternoon, April 23.
That’s because opposing Brewers right-hander Brandon Sproat (0-1, 6.88) will be up against Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal (3-2, 2.08), the two-time defending American League Cy Young Award winner.
With Milwaukee scheduled to square off against defending National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday at American Family Field, it will mark just the second time in baseball history a team will face defending Cy Young Award winners in consecutive games.
“What an opportunity for our guys,” manager Pat Murphy said. “Just incredible.”
The Boston Red Sox are the only other team to have done so, when they faced Skubal and Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves on May 14 and 16 of last season.
A first-inning hole for the Brewers
Skubal fired 10 strikes among the 11 first-inning pitches he threw, striking out a pair and facing the minimum.
Things weren’t nearly as smooth for Sproat in the bottom of the frame as Kevin McGonigle doubled to lead off and with two outs Riley Greene went down and golfed a first-pitch curveball out of the zone over the wall in left-center for a 2-0 Tigers lead.
