Gas prices keep going up in Wisconsin as war in Iran continues

Gas prices continue to climb in Wisconsin and across the country as the war in Iran wages on.

There’s currently a ceasefire in Iran, but the US Navy is blocking ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is mostly closed as Iran seized two ships that tried to pass through on Wednesday, April 22, though Iranian officials say one ship did pay a toll to pass through.

Around 25% of the world’s seaborne oil passes through the strait – that’s about 20 million barrels of oil a day. With the strait blocked, gas prices are soaring.

How are gas prices in Wisconsin changing?

Wisconsin gas prices are $3.685 per gallon on Thursday, April 23, according to AAA. The cost per gallon was $3.764 a week ago, $3.666 a month ago and $2.971 a year ago. National gas trends are similar, jumping from $3.172 a year ago to $4.031 now.

A gallon of gas in Wisconsin is cheaper than a gallon in Illinois, $3.685 compared to $4.277. But Minnesota sits at $3.639 and Iowa at $3.506.

The national average of gas is still cheaper than the all-time high of $4.17 from March 2022. That number broke the previous record of $4.11 set in July 2008.

How do I find cheap gas in Wisconsin?

The website GasBuddy tracks the cost of a gallon of gas across the city. Users report gas prices to the site, which then updates in real time to show the lowest cost of fuel in the area.

The Costco in Menomonee Falls and the Meijer in Pewaukee both sit at $3.45 per gallon, the cheapest in the area as of Thursday, April 23. The BP at 3100 S. 60th Street is the cheapest in Milwaukee at $3.47.
