EVANSVILLE – The first wave of layoffs at an Evansville automotive plant that has been in business in some capacity for more than 60 years will begin in early June, with the full operation expected to close at the end of the year.
RESRG Automotive filed a WARN notice with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development last week. By the time Dec. 31 comes, 266 people will lose their jobs.
The first wave will begin June 6-19, with five people eliminated, the WARN notice states. A second round of 22 will come in July, with 14 in August, 37 in October, and finally 161 right around Christmas.
The plant made plastic and chrome-plated parts for automotive trim.
“The affected employees are not represented by a labor union and do not have bumping rights,” the notice read. “RESRG Automotive will work closely with the affected employees to minimize the impact of this business decision, and all affected employees will be offered the opportunity to seek employment at other RESRG Automotive facilities.”
The announcement, as usual, comes on the heels of a corporate merger.
A little more than a year ago, private equity firm Atlas Holdings announced it was buying SRG Global, which had previously been owned by Guardian Industries, the plant’s former overseer.
The plant on North Congress Avenue has been in operation in some capacity since at least 1964, when it opened as Windsor Plastics. According to Courier & Press archives, Guardian bought out the plant’s previous parent company, Cue Industries, Inc., in the late 1980s. The name change to Guardian came in 1996.
