The Green Bay Packers may not have the draft capital to land Dexter Lawrence, but that hasn’t stopped them from being mentioned as a potential suitor for the All-Pro.
Without a first-round pick in 2026 or 2027, the Packers would seemingly be out of the running if the New York Giants decide to move their star defensive tackle. Still, ESPN’s Adam Schefter didn’t dismiss the possibility.
“I could see the Packers in that mix, yes,” Schefter said Wednesday during a radio appearance on ESPN Milwaukee.
Lawrence and the Giants have reportedly reached an impasse on a contract extension, and the three-time Pro Bowler requested a trade last week amidst frustrations with his current deal. He’s scheduled to earn $20 million this season and $19.5 million in 2027.
At 28 years of age, Lawrence is still in his prime, but he’s coming off a down year by his standards. After three straight Pro Bowl seasons and two second-team All-Pro selections, he finished 2025 with 31 tackles, four tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and eight quarterback hits in 17 games.
The Packers need help at defensive tackle after including Kenny Clark in last year’s trade for Micah Parsons and Colby Wooden in a recent trade for Zaire Franklin.
The challenge is cost. According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, teams believe the Giants would require at least a first-round pick—and potentially more—to move Lawrence. For context, the Dallas Cowboys gave up a 2027 conditional first-round pick, a 2026 second-rounder, and former first-rounder Mazi Smith to acquire Quinnen Williams last season.
Even beyond draft capital, the Packers would need to fork over a deal that places Lawrence among the highest-paid defensive tackles in the league. He currently ranks 10th at the position in total contract value, per Spotrac.
It’s a long shot, but not an illogical one. General manager Brian Gutekunst has made it clear the Packers aim to be involved in every major conversation, and Lawrence, an elite talent at a position of need, fits that mold.
