No. 10 UCLA softball put up 10 runs to win their second game against Illinois at Eichelberger Field in Urbana-Champaign, Ill on Saturday. The Bruins picked up the 10-1 win to move to 36-5 on the season.
The Bruins shutout the Fighting Illini in their first matchup ending 17-0 and UCLA continued the scoring offensive the second time around. UCLA’s offense remained explosive in the second game with 10 runs and six walks for 10 runs.
Finding your footing
Both teams struggled to get things going on offense with the Fighting Illini getting the first hit in the bottom of the second. The game remained scoreless as both teams entered the third.
Running away in the third
UCLA ran away with the game in the top of the third with four hits leading to six runs. All six scores came off of home runs with senior infielder Jordan Woolery hitting the first three-run homer and freshman infielder Bri Alejandre hitting the second three-run home run.
Battling in the fourth
In the top of the fourth, UCLA extended their lead with freshman utility Jolyna Lamar hit the Bruins third home run of the game to put the Bruins up 7-0.
Keep on scoring
UCLA redshirt freshman infielder Aleena Garcia continued the Bruins trend of hitting home runs by blasting one to begin the top of the fifth.
Adding on more for good measure
The Bruins closed out the game in the top of the sixth with two more runs. It would be the first time in the game UCLA scored without it coming off of a home run. Illinois was unable to get a hit in the sixth and the Bruins took the second game.
UCLA will play their series finale against Illinois on Sunday with an anticipated start time of 10 a.m. PT.
