Here's a sneak peek of the new Trinity Health Livingston Hospital

The new Trinity Health Livingston Hospital becomes fully operational at 1 p.m. April 19, completing a long-awaited move from Howell to Brighton.

The organization is closing at 620 Byron Road in favor of 7555 Grand River Ave.

During a media tour April 2, John O’Malley — president of Trinity Health Livingston and Trinity Health Medical Center Brighton — said the new facility was built to maintain local care, with the nearest other hospitals housed in Ann Arbor, Novi, Flint and Lansing.

“We’re really on an island out here,” O’Malley said.

The hospital is connected to Trinity Health Medical Center Brighton. When higher-level care is needed, patients can be quickly transported to Trinity Health Ann Arbor. The building will be more efficient with staffing and technology, according to O’Malley.

Dr. David Vandenberg, chief medical officer of Trinity Health Livingston and Trinity Health Ann Arbor, said the new hospital is a level four trauma center — able to provide 24/7 trauma care and rapid transfer in emergency situations. The hospital will focus on community care and surgeries.

Michelle Weise, associate chief nursing officer, said the building’s emergency department personnel have the same certifications and training as those employed by a level one trauma center.

“They are equipped and prepared to care for anything,” she said.

During the transition April 19, Trinity Health will have extra staff at both facilities to ensure personnel are readily available. All ambulances will be directed to the new emergency department beginning at 4 a.m. The emergency department in Howell will remain open for walk-in care until 1 p.m.

The new hospital stretches four stories and 174,000 square feet, with 56 acuity-adaptable beds that allow medical teams to care for patients across conditions and severity levels without moving them from room to room.

The expanded campus has 18 short-stay beds, eight licensed operating rooms, intensive cardiac rehabilitation services and a hospital-based medical and surgical specialty practice.
