PPD officer fired gun during fight with suspect in Downtown Starbucks

No one was injured in an officer-involved shooting in downtown Pensacola on Thursday after an officer attempted to arrest a suspect who had outstanding warrants, according to the agency.

One PPD officer was involved in a shooting March 26 near the downtown Starbucks, according to department spokesperson Mike Wood. He said the officer was on a break when a Starbucks employee approached him and said the suspect had a felony warrant.

“The officer approached that individual to check. When he found out the individual had a warrant, he went to handcuff this individual and a fight began,” Wood said on scene. “At some point during the fight, the officer fired his weapon.”

Wood said no one was hit by the single shot fired by the officer.

Nearby witnesses say they saw a man being taken out of a patrol car, put onto a stretcher and leave in an ambulance. The man did not seem to be in distress.

Gregory Street at 14th Avenue was closed due to the shooting but has since been reopened.

We will have more on this story as it develops.
